Pens, many pens, pads of paper, spiral bound, legal pads, journals, more pens, the spoils of a writer. The excitement of finding the perfect pen, the perfect writing tool. Felt tip pens, gel pens, specialty pens, ball point pens, and black ink, only black ink, never blue.
My current favorite pen choice is a Pentel Ener-Gel pen, the bigger 1.0 size feels good in my hand as I write. The white legal pad I’m writing this on is the current paper of choice. Though I’ve written on legal pads dressed in pale yellow, blue and even pink, classic white feels like the perfect surface to express my thoughts right now.
There is true joy for me in the potential of a writer's tools. A new pen and a blank page, the start of anything, endless possibilities. A new poem, a note to a dear friend, a person’s inner-most thoughts, a love letter, a blog post, a to-do list to keep life organized, and moving forward, always moving forward.
I can talk about paper, journals, pens, and the process of writing endlessly. The skill of a writer can only come with practice. The practice of writing can only happen with the essential tools of a writer. Yes, I use my computer, too, but when I’m working out thought, expressing prose, building a new poem, there’s nothing like touching pen to paper to literally make my mark in the world. Paper, and pens. Pens, and paper, the spoils of a writer.
Thank you for reading.
